Finding Your Fit

"If the shoe fits, wear it." - An Idiom
As this new week starts to unfold, this endearing term has been roaming around in my head. Perhaps it's because on Saturday I found an amazing pair of jeans that fit beautifully!! For any one who has put a pound or two on, as I have in the past year, you know what a wonderful feeling this can be! Especially when it occurs in your standard size. Pounds or not, just finding something you love to wear is always a great experience - especially when you weren't expecting to do so.
As I looked up the saying here this morning to see who said it, I discovered that the term is what is called an Idiom. An Idiom is a colorful style of expression whose meaning is more endearing than making sense on its own. I love the thought of that on many levels. In going one step further I discovered that this particular Idiom as been around since the 1700's.
It was not clarified who penned this idiom (as it goes with most idioms) but believed to have been derived from the expression - "If the cap fits, wear it." While that version of the expression has pretty much gone away - it is thought that perhaps the Cinderella fairy tale brought this modern day version to light. You know how Cinderella got her prince by sliding her foot perfectly into that special glass slipper. Even better yet, she produced the match to show that it was no accident.
So of course, as I typically do in this letter each Monday morning, my thoughts turn to equating the analogy of how this rolls into our lives on a consistent basis. Perhaps the thought to think about is our instincts and how this "feeling" of knowing when something is right in our lives - as opposed to the opposite, when we are really feeling out of whack with our true spirit.
Over the course of the past few days I have been working on the edits of my new book, Victory One Moment at a Time. I have had a wonderful women with a strong grasp of the English language take it under her English professor wing and over the course of the past 6 weeks she has gone through it line by line. The result is I have a number of mainly grammatical changes to make. Now I could have been completely discouraged by this process, but in fact I have been even more encouraged!
I have never claimed to be an English Major (as you may have noted in my letters) - I am just a woman who has found a love for writing. In fact when I threw caution to the wind and quit worrying so much about perfection in writing - my true writing voice came to life. As I move through my new book once again, line-by-line, I find myself rediscovering my words and getting more excited to share them with the world!
You could say that for me, sitting down to the keyboard is my glass slipper - sharing my words with the world is what brings on my, "dreams come true".
What is your glass slipper or fit that over the course of time has become perfect for you? What is it that brings a complete smile to your face when you are doing it? For most truly successful people (in every aspect of the word) it is usually when they are in that element that crosses them between their personal and professional life - giving purpose and meaning for each step that is taken. For myself, I also find this purpose and meaning in creating opportunity for growth and encouragement with other women entrepreneurs.
Again I ask you what are your true fit or fits? How often in the course of a day do you find yourself wearing the shoe that fits? Or do you find yourself taking the off the shoe that fits so well only to put on one that is clunky and uncomfortable. Sometimes it is just a matter of working at that process of discovering your dreams to get it "just right". I heard Barbara DeAngelis speak at a conference a few months back and I loved these words she said, "A diamond is a piece of coal that stuck to the job."
Think about how many times you stuck to something that you weren't so good at to begin with, then you found it starting to "fit you like a glove". In other words, "If at first you don't succeed try and try again." Low and behold, one day you will find yourself in the dressing room with that perfect pair of jeans on!
In the week ahead - the last one of January 2010 - I wish you the joy of heading to do the work that fills your soul with joy - work that as I like to say, actually become play!
Happy Shopping!
